Something Rotten! begins by introducing Nick and Nigel Bottom, two brothers and playwrights who detest Shakespeare and his wild success. As they struggle to write one successful play for the Elizabethan stage, Shakespeare produces hit play after hit play, only adding to their contempt. Determine to outdo him, they seek the guidance of a fortune teller who tells them the future of stage involves the merging of singing, dancing and acting in a new form called “the musical." Confident this secret insight will give them the edge they need, the brothers set out to write a musical, and when it flops, they become more desperate than ever. Hilarity ensues as they look for any way to succeed in this rollicking and refreshing musical comedy.
Awards and Recognition
Something Rotten! received nine Tony Award nominations in 2015, including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book of Music. It won a Tony for Best Featured Actor. The show also received eleven Outer Critics Award nominations, most notably for Outstanding New Musical, eight Drama Desk Award nominations, and two Drama League nominations. Great music earned it a 2016 Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album.
Performances of Something Rotten! take place at Cincinnati’s Aronoff Center for the Arts. Featuring the Weston Art Gallery and three unique performance areas, the Aronoff, as it's known locally, hosts Broadway shows, ballet, concerts, theater and much more. Producer Kevin McCollum decided Something Rotten! would skip its pre-Broadway showing in Seattle, planned for April 2015, opting to open on Broadway when a theater became available. It now tours the U.S. receiving rave reviews.
