About Something Rotten!
Something Rotten! Is a musical comedy that premiered in 2015 at the St. James Theatre in New York. Reviews claim that Something Rotten! “deserves to be Broadway’s next big fat hit” (New York Post) and that it’s “the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years” (Time Out New York). There’s no question that this clever, hilarious and entertaining musical will be a long-running success.
The story is set in 1595, in South London where the Bottom brothers--Nick and Nigel--can’t catch a break. At the tail-end of the Renaissance, William “The Bard” Shakespeare has completely stolen the spotlight, making it incredibly hard for new talent to be noticed. Employing the help of the one and only seer, Thomas Nostradamus, the Bottom brothers learn that a musical comedy will be the next big hit. Something Rotten! chronicles their hysterical attempt to attain fame, fortune and prominence.
Original Broadway Cast and Score
The original tour starred Brian d’Arcy James (Shrek the Musical, Hamilton) as Nick Bottom, John Cariani (Fiddler on the Roof, The Tempest) as Nigel Bottom, Christian Borle (Sweeny Todd, Mary Poppins) as William Shakespeare and Brad Oscar (The Producers, Spamalot) as Nostradamus. Brian d’Arcy James and Christian Borle were both nominated for their performances, but Borle was the only Rotten! actor to bring home a Tony Award.
The music and lyrics for Something Rotten! were created by Wayne and Karey Kirkpatrick. The album was nominated for Best Original Score and Best Musical and there are several songs that have received critical acclaim. They include, “Welcome to the Renaissance,” “God, I Hate Shakespeare,” “I Love the Way,” “The Black Death,” “It’s Eggs!” and “Hard to Be the Bard.”
Something Rotten! is performed at the Hobby Center in Houston, Texas. Located at 800 Bagby Street in downtown Houston, this venue can hold more than 3,000 patrons.
