If Son Little tickets are up for grabs, you don't want to miss out on a live performance by this soulful singer. A twist on Little Son, his one-time nickname, Son Little is the stage name of modern R&B artist Aaron Livingston. Hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Son Little has made a name for himself with tender songs like "Lay Down." However, he's not afraid to branch out, either. In addition to a thriving solo career, Son Little has played with a diverse roster of bands and performers. You may recognize him from playing and producing music with legendary soul maven Mavis Staples, as well as R&B outfit The Roots, rapper Hezekiah, electronic music producer RJD2, hip hop group MHz Legacy, experimental musician Hot Sugar, and indie rock outfit Portugal. The Man.
In 2014, Son Little's solo career took off with his debut EP, Things I Forgot. He followed it up in October of the next year with Son Little, his first album recorded in a studio. The eponymous album included the popular single "Lay Down," for which he is perhaps most widely known. Stints with the "Live on the Road to Lagunitas" series and a December 2015 NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert have further thrust Son Little into the public eye. Son Little's latest record, New Magic - which ranges from the poppy, Jackson 5-esque single "Blue Magic (Waikiki)" to the heart-wrenching "Demon to the Dark" - was released in September 2017. With a Grammy for his work as a producer on Mavis Staples' "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" as well as international Son Little tour dates under his belt, there's no telling how far this musician will go.
From slow-burning, soulful ballads like "Your Love Will Blow Me Away When My Heart Aches" to rock-inspired tunes like "The River," Son Little explores various sonic territories. He has been classified as everything from rhythm and blues to psychedelic soul. Having grown up with a preacher as a father, Son Little's gospel and influences are a given. However, he is equally indebted to the sounds of rock 'n' roll--he lists Jimi Hendrix as a hero--as well as more modern influences. Son Little cites Paul McCartney, Kendrick Lamar, Grizzly Bear and Little Dragon all as inspiration for his self-titled album, and he's toured with such varied acts as Mumford & Sons, Kelis and Shakey Graves. Notably, Son Little often uses electronics to create vocal loops and other effects. According to a review published in The New York Times, "The music had roots, but wasn't looking back."
Son Little has drawn comparisons to soul star Leon Bridges as well as Gary Clark Jr.
