Born in Denver, Colorado, in 1979, Son Lux is the stage name of Ryan Lott. The artist's debut recording, an 11-track album called At War With Walls and Mazes earned the performer the prize of Best New Artist at NPR's All Songs Considered awards. Son Lux was soon augmented into a three-piece when Ian Chang and Rafiq Bhatia were brought in to add to the alternative hip-hop sound. Sometimes described as a post-rock trip hop outfit, the sound of Son Lux has evolved since Lott's debut in 2008 and is hard to pin down. The genre-defying audio produced by Son Lux has impressed many fans and music journalists alike, however. It is distinctly their own.
Son Lux's musical development
Following the aforementioned award-winning debut from Son Lux, Lott went on to write and record material for his follow-up album. This work ended up being released on the same label as the first, this being Anticon, an independent record company operating from Los Angeles. We Are Rising came out in 2011, offering a total of nine tracks that cumulatively ran to just over 35 minutes. The post-rock work was described at the time in the press as offering a 'dark and operatic middle ground [that lies]... between Owen Pallett and In Rainbows-era Radiohead'. A fully orchestrated electronic album, We Are Rising featured slower tracks such as “Leave the Riches” and “Claws”, as well as the poppier sound of songs such as “All the Right Things”.
By 2013, Son Lux had switched labels to the Indianapolis-based Joyful Noise Recordings. It was for this independent record company that Lott began working on his next release. Made available in October of that year, Lanterns was a 10-track album. The LP made it into the top 20 of the US Heatseekers charts.
The following year, Lott incorporated the musicianship of Chang and Bhatia into Son Lux as a band. Bhatia is a composer and producer in his own right and brought his guitar skills to the project, having played on a few tracks of Lanterns previously. As a trio, Son Lux went on to record Bones. The developing sound of the group can be heard on tracks such as “Change is Everything”, which was more experimental in nature than many of Son Lux's earlier tracks. Anthemic qualities ran throughout the LP, which was made available on vinyl as well as for digital download. Since this release, two EPs have made their way into the public domain. Stranger Forms was released in 2016, followed by Remedy in 2017, both on the Joyful Noise label.
