MOBO recognition for phenomenal live performances
Sons of Kemet began making music in 2011 and consists of two drummers, Eddie Hick and Tom Skinner, and tuba player Theon Cross, alongside Hutchings, who also delivers the band's shamanistic saxophone and occasional vocal expressions of outrage, wisdom and joy. Their debut album ‘Burn' was released in 2013 and won the Arts Desk Album of the Year, as well as picking up a nomination for world-renowned DJ Giles Peterson's Album of the Year. Their subsequent live performances also earned a prestigious MOBO Award for Best Jazz Act. Tracks from ‘Burn' saw many different remixes from producers such as Alex Patchwork and Micachu (composer of such film soundtracks as ‘Under the Skin' and the Academy Award nominated ‘Jackie') and received widespread critical acclaim. The group's second album, ‘Lest We Forget What We Came Here to Do', followed in 2015 and third effort ‘Your Queen Is a Reptile' in 2018, where they lost out to indie rockers Wolf Alice for the Mercury Prize. Join Hutchings and co. for an explosive, dynamic, whirlwind night of jazz fusion and experience four musicians at the top of their game led by a man at the height of his creative ability. Shabaka Hutchings: jazz's revolutionary new icon
To instil an idea of how the aggressive rhythms and abrasive, bold jazz sounds of Sons of Kemet came to be, envisage this: nine-year-old Shabaka Hutchings, living in Barbados, jamming along to hip-hop giants Tupac, Nas and Biggie Smalls on his clarinet. From there, Hutchings earned a degree in classical music in London and began building a name for himself in the flourishing London jazz scene. Over his career, Hutchings has played with the likes of Polar Bear, Heliocentrics, Mulatu Astatke, Floating Points and Melt Yourself Down. The charismatic band leader, however, saves his most strident, brawny, powerful and angry music for Sons of Kemet. Make sure you use StubHub to catch this pioneering jazz outfit live!
