Spurred on by the school fight song “ ”Hail! South Dakota!,“ ” the South Dakota Coyotes program has risen through the ranks of college football since its founding in 1889. Early in its history, the school was a member of the NAIA, an association of small colleges and universities throughout America. In 1956, South Dakota joined the NCAA College Division, later reclassified as Division II. In 2007, the school transitioned to NCAA Division I-AA, also known as the football championship subdivision. After a brief association with the Great West Football Conference, the school joined the Missouri Valley Conference in 2012 on a permanent basis. Head coach Bob Nielson, who had previously won two Division II championships with Minnesota-Duluth, was hired by the program in 2016. Under his leadership, South Dakota made its first FCS playoff appearance with a record of 8–5. Led by quarterback Chris Streveler, the Coyotes beat No. 22 Nicholls State in the first round by a score of 38–31. However, a loss to No. 5 Sam Houston State in the second round ended the Coyotes season.
