Steven Van Zandt was born in 1950 in Boston and grew up on the Jersey shore. He discovered music when he learned to play guitar as a young boy. He gained the moniker "Miami Steve" due to his affinity for wearing Hawaiian-print shirts. A professional songwriter since 1974, Van Zandt was inspired by early performances of the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. He is of southern Italian descent and often uses the stage name "Little Steven" when performing. Van Zandt wears a trademark bandana over his head because of the scars he suffered in a car accident as a teen.

Perhaps his most famous role is that of strip club owner Silvio Dante on The Sopranos, which he appeared in from 1999 to 2007 despite having no prior acting experience. After that, Van Zandt played himself on the Norwegian soap opera Hotel Caesar in 2010. Van Zandt's star continued to rise as he took on a leading role in Netflix's Lilyhammer from 2012 to 2014. Add radio host to his resume, as Van Zandt continues to host Little Steven's Underground Garage, a show in weekly syndication since 2002. Van Zandt started his own recording label in 2006 called Wicked Cool Records.
