Sport: Street Skateboarding
Creator: Rob Dyrdek
Street League Skateboarding TicketsStreet League Skateboarding’s circuit gives daredevils center stage. In America, some students of the sport trace it back to the late 1940s when California surfers engaged in it when surfing conditions weren’t good. Skateboarding as we know it today took on a whole new face when skateboarding pro Rob Dyrdek first put together four events in different cities. His Street League Skateboarding tournaments immediately took off with avid skateboarders and the public. SLS today hosts domestic and international stops. They have included Los Angeles, Brazil, Spain, London, New York City, Chicago, Australia, Munich and Tampa. Participating in the Tampa Pro is a way for SLS pros to get extra points for getting in the SLS World Championship. It’s also a pathway for one talented skateboarder to get on the SLS roster to compete on its professional World Tour. There are 35 men and 14 women on the tour. What can you tell me about the Tampa Pro?In 2015, SLS entered into a partnership with the Skateboard Park of Tampa (SPoT) where this important event is held. In fact, the Tampa Pro is the longest-running event in skateboarding. In 2020, the Tampa Pro will be held from February 28 through March 1, with a welcome party happening on February 27. The women’s open qualifiers and practice happen on Friday. On Saturday, watch the men and women practice and see the women’s semifinals and the men's street qualifiers. On Sunday, the location is the stage for the women’s finals and the men’s semifinals and finals. StubHub has your Street League Skateboarding tickets.
What is one way a talented amateur can get recognition?Knowing the power of media, SLS organizers welcome seeing videos of non-SLS pros. That’s why they came up with the idea of SLS Picks. Non-SLS pros whose skateboarding videos get noticed by SLS can become pros if they perform well in select tournaments.
What’s the Damn Am?They’re competitions for non-SLS amateurs that take place at the same locations as the professional contests. The top 10 skateboarders from each stop qualify for the amateur event at Tampa (Tampa Am). The athlete with the best two results overall wins the title Damn Am of the Year and gets a Straight Shot into the Tampa Am finals.
What’s it like at an SLS tourney? The atmosphere is very energetic. While the attire of the spectators may be casual, their attitude is not. They expect to be rewarded by moves that will make them shout, cheer and throw up high-fives. While there are always some first-timers, many people know the sport well. So, even if you don’t, you can tell by the audience reaction when a contestant has invented a new trick or done an old one well.
Who are some of the American and international stars of skateboarding?Skateboarding becomes an Olympic event for the first time at the Tokyo Games in 2020. Americans who are contenders to make the Olympic team are Nyjah Huston and Ryan Sheckler of California, Ishod Wair of New Jersey and Chaz Ortiz of Illinois. Huston won the SLS 2019 Men’s World Championship in Sao Paulo, Brazil. That was his sixth SLS world crown. Don’t count out the other skateboarders who will be anxious to win a spot in the Games, though. Brazilians to look for are Kelvin Hoefler, Luan Oliveira and Felipe Gustavo. The Brazilian women are also strong. Pamela Rosa won the title at the 2019 SLS Women’s World Championships. For good reason, Brazil has been the location for more than one SLS World Championship. Shane O’Neill, an Australian, is another accomplished international competitor.
