A Mississippi-based will they/won't they?
Set in the Mississippi town of Glorious Hill in the early 20th Century, 'Summer and Smoke' explores the complex relationship between next door neighbours John Buchanan Jr., a rebellious doctor, and Alma Winemiller, a high-maintenance unmarried daughter of a minister. Written by Tennessee Williams, the play first opened in Dallas in 1948 before transferring to Broadway's Music Box Theatre for a 102-show run later that same year. Staged in 1952, a revival of 'Summer and Smoke' at downtown New York's Circle in the Square Theatre helped to kickstart the off-Broadway scene, while a 1961 film adaptation saw both Geraldine Page and Una Merkel pick up Oscar nominations. The play returned to Broadway in a revised version named 'The Eccentricities of a Nightingale' in 1976 and eventually hit the London stage in 2006 at the Apollo Theatre in a production starring Chris Carmack and Rosamund Pike. It's also been adapted for a 1972 TV movie starring Lee Remick and David Hedison and a 2010 opera staged by the Manhattan School of Music Opera Theater. Rebecca Frecknall's London staging
In 2017, a new version of 'Summer and Smoke' directed by Rebecca Frecknall hit the London stage at the Almeida Theatre before transferring to the much larger Duke of York's Theatre. Patsy Ferran ('God's Own Country', 'Darkest Hour') and Matthew Needham ('The Ritual', 'Sherlock') played the leading couple, Alma and John, while other cast members included Seb Carrington as Archie, Eric MacLennan as Papa Gonzales, Tok Stephen as Roger, Forbes Masson as Rev Winemiller, Anjana Vasan as Rosemary' and Nancy Crane as Alma's mother. Tom Scutt served as designer, while lighting appeared courtesy of Lee Curran. This particular production earned rave reviews from the press, with The Stage singling out Ferran for a performance of 'exceptional precision and attention to detail', and The Guardian claiming that 'it restores Williams' wrongly neglected play to a central place in the canon.' Don't miss out on the opportunity to see one of Tennessee Williams' most underrated works live on stage and purchase your Summer and Smoke tickets on StubHub.
