The Southwestern Athletic Conference is comprised of teams in the southern portion of the United States. The SWAC is generally considered to be the elite conference for HBCU schools and leads the way for historically black colleges regarding past alumni who make it to the NFL. The conference is talent-laden and has thrilled fans of the SWAC since its inception 100 years ago. Alcorn State is the current SWAC football champion after defeating Southern University 37–28 in the 2018 conference championship game. Alcorn State also won conference championships in 2014 and 2015. Grambling State was able to wrestle away the two championships Alcorn State did not win over the last five years and was crowned champion itself in 2016 and 2017. An added treat for fans of the SWAC is the end-of-the-year game that pits the SWAC champion against the champion of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in the Celebration Bowl. What former SWAC players are considered all-time greats?

The SWAC has produced a number of football players who went on to enjoy Hall of Fame careers in the NFL. Walter Payton rushed for more than 3,500 yards while playing four years at Jackson State. Payton went on to star in the NFL and finished his professional career as the all-time rushing yards leader for the league. Grambling State alumnus Doug Williams enjoyed his greatest day as an NFL quarterback by leading his Washington Redskins to a victory in Super Bowl XXII. Shannon Sharpe and Jerry Rice are two other NFL Hall of Famers who entertained crowds in the SWAC before embarking on professional careers.

Who are the great coaches in SWAC football history?

The list of field generals that have led SWAC football teams into battle is as impressive as the players who took the field. The most accomplished of them own is Eddie Robinson, who took over as head coach of Grambling State in 1941 when he was only 22 years old. By the time Robinson retired in 1998, 200 of his former players had played some form of professional football, and he had led the Tigers to 45 winning seasons.
