About Sweeney Todd
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is based on the 1973 play by Christopher Bond. The story focuses on a barber, Sweeney Todd/Benjamin Barker, who was banished from London on false charges by the corrupt Judge Turpin. Forcibly taking Todd’s wife Lucy as his own, the evil Judge Turpin was rumored to have driven her to suicide.
Upon this realization, Todd plots his revenge with his landlady and a local restaurateur, Mrs. Lovett. Murder, murder and more murder coincide with Todd’s insatiable appetite for vengeance. However, to hide the bodies that pile up, Mrs. Lovett begins to start a lucrative business with delicious human meat pies.
With productions running from 1979 and on, Sweeney Todd has been entertaining audiences and critics for decades. In addition to an impressive Broadway and West End run, it’s won a total of 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Orchestrations and more.
