Take That biography
By the early 1990s, American group New Kids on the Block had become one of the biggest pop acts on the planet, and Manchester music mogul Nigel Martin Smith set about creating a British equivalent. Impressed with a young Gary Barlow's catalogue of self-penned songs, Smith decided to base his new boy band 'Kick It' around his musical talents. Heartthrobs Robbie Williams, Howard Donald, Mark Owen and Jason Orange nailed the auditions, and after changing the group's name, the fledgling boy band soared into the UK top 10 with their cover of "It Only Takes a Minute".
They released debut LP Take That and Party in 1992, but it was their sophomore album Everything Changes (1993) that catapulted them to global superstardom. Based on Barlow's personal material, the album established themselves as one of the biggest pop acts in the world, and tracks such as "Pray" and "Relight My Fire" are still top hits on the airwaves some 20 years later.
When Robbie Williams left the band in 1995, resulting in tensions led to the eventual dissolution of the whole group. After enjoying a decade of individual solo successes, the band returned as a quartet in 2005. Their comeback album Beautiful World soared straight to the top spot in the UK Album Charts, swiftly becoming one of the best-selling albums in UK music history. Williams returned to the set up in 2010 for the band's Progress album. After another short hiatus, the group returned in 2014, this time without Williams and Orange. The trio's triumphant number one album, aptly titled III.
Despite the now-trimmed line-up, the band's fans remain as fervent as ever and are falling over themselves with anticipation about the trio's latest shows. Get Take That tickets at StubHub UK for a place in the crowd.
Top Take That tracks
While there's little doubt that songs such as the previously mentioned, "Relight My Fire" and "Pray" stand as classic Take That tracks, their cover of BeeGees song "How Deep Is Your Love" and "Back for Good" really saw them gain international renown, with both songs going platinum and gold in Italy, Germany and Denmark. While the former, was originally released as part of their Greatest Hits compilation, the latter track, written by Gary Barlow himself in only 15 minutes, originally released during a BRIT Awards ceremony. It was only due the stellar demand, that the single's release date was brought forward.
