About Tame Impala

Tame Impala is the psychedelic music project of Australian multi-instrumentalist Kevin Parker, and the name on the tickets covers one of the more unusual setups in modern music. In the studio, Parker writes, records, performs, and produces every part himself. The project began in Perth in 2007 as a home-recording experiment, with tracks posted on Myspace drawing enough label attention to land a worldwide deal with Modular Recordings by 2008. To bring the music to the stage, Parker enlisted Dominic Simper and Jay Watson, and he chose a band name that mirrored the sound, a balance of untamed creativity and refined craft. That tension, woozy psychedelia wrapped around meticulous pop songwriting, has defined Tame Impala ever since.

The breakthrough came quickly. Debut album Innerspeaker arrived in 2010, earned Pitchfork's Best New Music designation, went gold in Australia, and won Triple J's J Award for Album of the Year. Lonerism followed in 2012, going platinum in Australia, picking up a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album, and becoming the first Australian album ever named NME's album of the year. Currents turned the project into a commercial force in 2015, selling 1.3 million copies worldwide, winning ARIA Awards for Best Rock Album and Album of the Year, and earning Parker the APRA Song of the Year prize for Let It Happen. It also marked a hard pivot toward the dance floor, a shift Parker has traced to hearing the Bee Gees while on mushrooms. The Slow Rush arrived in 2020 and swept the ARIAs with five awards, and fifth album Deadbeat, released in 2025, leaned into a house-adjacent sound inspired by Western Australia's rave scene. Its single Dracula, remixed with BLACKPINK's Jennie, became the project's first top-ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

Along the way, Tame Impala grew from blog-era buzz act to festival headliner, topping the bill at Coachella Music Festival in 2019 and earning a headlining slot at Primavera Sound 2020, only the second Australian act to do so. Parker's fingerprints spread across pop's biggest records too, with credits alongside Travis Scott, The Weeknd, and Dua Lipa, whose album Radical Optimism he co-wrote and produced, plus collaborations with Gorillaz, Justice, and Diana Ross. Vice named Tame Impala its Artist of the Decade for the 2010s, arguing no other act captured how genres cross-pollinated in the streaming era. On stage, the one-man studio project becomes a full live band that Parker has said plays its parts "as though it was a living sample," locking into hypnotic, repetitive grooves. Whether the setting is a festival main stage or an arena, Tame Impala tickets get you a night where psych-rock songcraft and dance-floor momentum share the same room.

Who are the members of Tame Impala?

Tame Impala is one person in the studio and a six-piece band on stage. Kevin Parker writes, records, performs, and produces every part himself, and has since the project began in 2007. The live lineup:
  • Kevin Parker: lead vocals and guitar, with occasional synthesiser.
  • Dominic Simper: guitar, synthesiser, and keyboards, with the live band since 2007.
  • Jay Watson: synthesiser, keyboards, guitar, and backing vocals, also part of the original lineup.
  • Julien Barbagallo: drums, percussion, and backing vocals since 2012.
  • Cam Avery: bass guitar, synthesiser, and backing vocals since 2013.
  • James Ireland: guitar, synthesiser, and percussion since 2025.
The project also runs deep with fellow Australian psych act Pond, whose members and collaborators overlap with Tame Impala through Watson, Ireland, and former live member Nick Allbrook.

What are Tame Impala's most popular songs?

The Less I Know the Better, Elephant, and Feels Like We Only Go Backwards anchor the Tame Impala catalog, the tracks that turn casual listeners into devoted fans. The deeper cuts pull just as hard:
  • The Less I Know the Better, voted number one in Triple J's Hottest 100 of the Decade in 2020 after placing fourth in the 2015 countdown.
  • Elephant, a number 7 finish in the 2012 Hottest 100 and the Tame Impala song The Wiggles covered to win the 2021 edition.
  • Feels Like We Only Go Backwards, which landed at number 9 in the same 2012 countdown.
  • Let It Happen, the opening track of Currents and the winner of the APRA Song of the Year award in 2016.
  • Borderline and Patience, the stand-alone singles released in 2019 ahead of The Slow Rush.
  • Dracula, the 2025 Deadbeat single whose remix with Blackpink's Jennie gave Tame Impala its first top-ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

What awards has Tame Impala won?

Tame Impala has won the ARIA Award for Album of the Year twice, for Currents and for The Slow Rush in 2020, and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album for Lonerism. The full shelf:
  • ARIA Music Awards: Best Rock Album and Album of the Year for Currents, then a five-trophy sweep at the 2020 ceremony for The Slow Rush, covering Album of the Year, Best Rock Album, Best Group, Engineer of the Year, and Producer of the Year.
  • APRA Awards: Song of the Year in 2016 for Let It Happen.
  • J Awards: Album of the Year for Innerspeaker in 2010 and Lonerism in 2012, making Tame Impala the first band to win Triple J's top honor twice.
  • Grammy Awards: a nomination for Best Alternative Music Album for Lonerism, announced in late 2013 for the 2014 ceremony.
  • Album of the Year lists: Lonerism topped NME's album of the year poll, a first for an Australian album, and took Rolling Stone's list as well.
Certifications back it up, with Innerspeaker certified gold in Australia and Lonerism certified platinum.

What is Tame Impala's fan culture like?

Tame Impala's fan culture shows up in the polls and on festival fields. Triple J's listener-voted Hottest 100 has carried the project since 2008, when Half Full Glass of Wine gave the project its first placement, and The Less I Know the Better went on to win the Hottest 100 of the Decade in 2020. The Wiggles then covered Elephant and won the 2021 countdown with it, a sign of how far the songs travel across generations. The crowd is unusually mixed for a psychedelic act, drawing rock lifers, dance-music fans, and, after the Jennie remix of Dracula, a K-pop crossover audience. That range is what Vice pointed to in naming Tame Impala its Artist of the Decade for the 2010s, describing music built equally for a crowd of thousands and a chill night alone, a duality that fits the isolation threaded through records like Lonerism. Parker keeps a direct line to fans as well, from the 2015 Reddit AMA where he teased listeners into demanding a new song and then dropped Disciples on the spot, to the 2025 DJ set at Barcelona's Nitsa Club during Primavera Sound where he previewed unreleased material. It all makes for one of the more varied rooms in live music, where Tame Impala tickets put psych-rock devotees and house heads on the same dance floor.
