Taylor Mac background
Born on August 24, 1973, in Laguna Beach, California, Taylor Mac developed a unique aesthetic from an early age in a private art school. In 1994, Mac attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, a two-year performing arts conservatory in New York City. After graduation, Mac wrote several stage plays, including The Levee, The Hot Month and The Face of Liberalism. Mac later turned toward more experimental work to convey different aspects of the human experience. The performances began to incorporate lots of different influences from all around the world. On October 29, 2018, Mac appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to perform a version of Patti Smith's "People Have the Power" in the days before the midterm election.

Taylor Mac is the creator of several hit performances. The Lily's Revenge: A Flowergory Manifold, which tells the story of a lily that rejects tradition and nostalgia, is a five-act play from 2009 that incorporates musical theater, Noh theater, installation art, dance and circus performances. The Last Two People on Earth: An Apocalyptic Vaudeville in 2015 includes music from Rodgers and Hammerstein, Patty Griffin, R.E.M. and Queen. A 24-Decade History of Popular Music was a musical extravaganza that devoted an entire hour to each decade of popular music between 1776 and 2016 to explore how music can exclude minorities and nonconforming people.
Taylor Mac noteworthy awards
Taylor Mac has received many accolades, including from the Herb Alpert Award in the Arts, Guggenheim Fellowship, OBIE Award, New York State Council of the Arts Grant, MacArthur Fellowship, Creative Capital Award, Helen Merrill Playwriting Award and Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History, among many others. Mac also became the Mellon Foundation Playwright in Resident starting in 2016. The Pulitzer Prize announced Mac as a finalist for the drama award in 2017 in recognition for A 24-Decade History of Popular Music.
