Temple Owls Women’s Basketball TicketsWomen at Temple University have played basketball for decades. Veronica "Ronnie" Maurek guided the Owls in the 1970s. After that, the university hired its first full-time women’s basketball coach in Andy McGovern. Under his guidance during the 1988-89 season, the team qualified for an NCAA tournament for the first time. In the 2016-17 season, Temple had a 24-8 overall record, and the Owls women’s basketball team finished second in the American. Dawn Staley is a well-respected former coach who led the team to five NCAA tournament appearances during her 2000-08 tenure. Cardoza has been head coach since 2008, and she has the most wins of any coach in Temple women’s basketball. Under the team’s current coaching staff, the guards are frequently some of the highest scorers. Make StubHub your source for Temple Owls Women’s Basketball tickets.
Are there any historic Temple games? In a game that went to five overtimes in February 2016, Memphis defeated Temple 100-97. The game tied for the longest in NCAA women’s basketball history to that time. The total of 97 points scored in overtime broke the previous record of 83 points put up in four overtimes on December 6, 2013 when Kentucky and Baylor played. In the Temple game, the teams were tied at 50 after regulation. For the Owls, impressive numbers were put up by Feyonda Fitzgerald with 26 points, Donnaizha Fountain with 17 points and 11 rebounds and Tanaya Atkinson with 15 points and 20 rebounds.
Is there any close game the team had in regulation? In a February 2020 game, the Temple Owls beat Houston 76-75. The Cougars got off to a rip-roaring start by scoring the first 11 points, but the Owls caught fire, and by the end of the third quarter, the team was up by three. Late in the fourth, they led by three, and a two-point layup at the buzzer was not enough to secure a win for Houston.
Who are some notable Temple Owls Women’s basketball players and coaches?Under Coach Cardoza and her staff, many players have been recognized for their abilities. Forward Mia Davis and Guard Alliya Butts were named to the American Athletic Conference First Team. Associate head coach Way Veney, who concentrates on guards, coaches them. Another player who was under her tutelage was Feyonda Fitzgerald who was Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Coaches’ All-America. This honor goes to 10 of the best players in NCAA Division 1. In the 2017 WNBA draft, she was the 20th overall draft pick. Veney also coached Tanaya Atkinson who was the first-ever player in the program to win the American scoring title.
What is Coach Cardoza’s game philosophy?Coach Cardoza wants her players to be versatile and well-rounded, so you can expect to see different names in the mix of high scorers and players who get a lot of assists. The team is strong on offense, which means that even when it’s behind it can come back as was the case in the Houston game. Sometimes, it will score three-pointers to help keep it in the game as it did against UCF. However, coach wants the team to be defense-minded too. Besides recently being the team’s leading scorer, expect to see Mia Davis jumping because she leads the team in rebounds with a total of 239, 144 on defense and 95 on offense. Another coaching strategy is putting the ball on the floor more to cause the opponent to commit fouls.
What happens on the annual School Day?Students from local schools come to this mid-day game between the Temple Owls and another team that’s held at the Liacouras Center. Before game and throughout the game, there are educational clinics.
