About Texas A&M Aggies Football

Texas A&M Aggies Football has represented Texas A&M University on the gridiron since 1894, competing in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) since 2012. Home games are played at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas, a stadium with a listed capacity of 102,733 that ranks as the largest in the SEC and the largest football stadium in the state. The Aggies are one of the sport's most tradition-rich programs, and the game-day atmosphere is built around a student body that stands for all four quarters.

The program claims three national championships, in 1919, 1927, and 1939, and has won 18 conference championships across the Southwest Conference and the Big 12. Legendary coaches have passed through College Station, including Dana X. Bible, who guided the 1919 team to an undefeated season, and Bear Bryant, whose Southwest Conference title run followed the famed Junction training camp. R.C. Slocum is the winningest coach in program history with 123 wins from 1989 to 2002, and the Aggies earned their first College Football Playoff berth after the 2025 season.

Texas A&M football is defined as much by its traditions as its results. Students and fans call themselves the 12th Man, standing throughout every game to signal their readiness to take the field, a custom that traces back to the 1922 Dixie Classic. Before home games, Midnight Yell Practice fills the stadium at midnight, and the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band, the largest military marching band in the world, performs its intricate halftime drills. The Wrecking Crew nickname has long been attached to the program's best defenses.

How many national championships have the Texas A&M Aggies Football won?

Texas A&M claims three national championships, in 1919, 1927, and 1939. The 1919 team finished 10-0 and was not scored upon, earning a retroactive title from selectors including the Billingsley Report and the National Championship Foundation. The 1927 squad went 8-0-1, and the 1939 Aggies went 11-0 and were voted No. 1 in the AP Poll after beating Tulane in the Sugar Bowl. Along with those three national titles, Texas A&M has won 18 conference championships, 17 in the Southwest Conference and one in the Big 12 in 1998.

Which Texas A&M Aggies Football players have won the Heisman Trophy?

Two Texas A&M players have won the Heisman Trophy: John David Crow in 1957 and Johnny Manziel in 2012. Manziel became the first freshman to win the award after a record-setting 2012 season that included an upset of then-No. 1 Alabama. The program has produced 33 consensus All-Americans, including Outland Trophy winner Luke Joeckel in 2012, and its alumni include College Football Hall of Fame and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees.

Who is Texas A&M's biggest football rival?

The Texas Longhorns Football are Texas A&M's biggest rival. The two programs first met in 1894, making it the longest-running rivalry for both schools and the most-played intrastate rivalry in college football. The series was played every year until 2012 and resumed in 2024 after Texas joined the SEC. The Aggies also share long-standing rivalries with LSU Tigers Football, Arkansas Razorbacks Football, Baylor Bears Football, Texas Tech Red Raiders Football, and TCU Horned Frogs Football, each tied to the program's Southwest Conference and SEC history.

What is the game-day experience like for Texas A&M Aggies Football?

A Texas A&M home game at Kyle Field is one of college football's most distinctive atmospheres. The entire student section stands for the length of the game as the 12th Man, stepping off the bleachers when the band plays the Aggie War Hymn. Midnight Yell Practice draws thousands the night before kickoff, the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band performs its precise halftime formations, and the Yell Leaders, five elected students rather than traditional cheerleaders, direct the crowd. The result is a stadium experience rooted in more than a century of Aggie tradition.
