Texas Bowl TicketsThe Texas Bowl has a long history, with the inaugural game occurring in 1959. However, the name of the bowl game has changed a few times, and it took a short hiatus in the late ‘80s and throughout the ‘90s. This bowl game has long featured at least one Texas team or a Big 12 team. Only recently was the SEC added as the primary opponent. The first official Texas Bowl game was played in 2006 to replace the Houston Bowl, which replaced the original Bluebonnet Bowl. The Big 12 and the SEC are two of the biggest and best football conferences in the country. Get your Texas Bowl tickets at StubHub!
How are the teams for the Texas Bowl determined? The Bluebonnet Bowl selected one Division I college football team out of Texas and another out-of-state opponent. During the years as the Houston Bowl, the teams were either from the Big 12, Conference USA, the Big East or Texas Christian University while they played in the Mountain West. Today, the teams are selected from the Big 12 and the SEC.
Do any long-standing Texas Bowl rivalries exist? One of the greatest Texas Bowl rivalries has been between the University of Arkansas and the University of Texas. The rivalry peaked from 1958 to 1978 and simmered once Arkansas departed the Southwest Conference and regular-season games between the two historic rivals almost stopped entirely since 1992. With the reformatting of the participating conferences of the Texas Bowl, the rivalry ramped up with an Arkansas win in 2014. Now that the teams are selected from two football powerhouse conferences, the SEC and the Big 12, these games are beginning to develop strong rivalries and in-demand appearances by both fans and teams.
