Addams Family, the Musical is loosely based on Charles Addams' writings and cartoons about an eccentric and macabre, yet loveable, family. Movie and television fans may remember the antics and exploits of Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Uncle Fester and Pugsley, as well as those of their family and servants from the 1960s television series and the 1980s movie of the same name.
For those unfamiliar with the Addams franchise, the cartoons, movie and TV series all follow this family's clashes with the world outside their mansion gates. Not everyone understands when Morticia cuts off the buds on her rose bushes, preferring the dark thorns and branches, or when Wednesday plays with headless dolls.
Addams Family, the Musical features music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, best known for writing Jersey Boys. The Addams Family storyline introduces three new characters, Mal, Lucas and Alice Beineke, who are described as a straight-laced family from the Midwestern United States. (Lucas is the now grown-up Wednesday's "normal" boyfriend and Mal and Alice are his parents.) The production also includes 20 original songs and a chorus of Addams ancestors.
The UK production stars Carrie Hope Fletcher as Wednesday, Samantha Womack as Morticia and Les Dennis as Fester.
Addams Family London History
Addams Family, the Musical debuted on Broadway in 2010, at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, after a brief tryout in Chicago. Since then, the show has played cities around the globe, including Sydney, Buenos Aires, Tokyo, Prague and Mexico City. The original Broadway cast included Nathan Lane as Gomez and Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia.
The Addams Family plot centers around Wednesday and Lucas bringing their families together over dinner so they can announce that they wish to get married. However, in typical Addams fashion, things aren't that easy. The action involves a secret potion, a pet giant squid, a thunderstorm that traps everyone in the gloomy mansion and, of course, a tango. Uncle Fester acts as the master of ceremonies (in somewhat vaudevillian fashion), tying all of the plot lines and assorted characters together.
