The Band: A New Musical Background
The Band: A New Musical tells the story of Mancunian pop group Take That. Take That originally consisted of vocalists Mark Owen and Robbie Williams, songwriter Gary Barlow, and dancers Howard Donald and Jason Orange. The band was formed under its original name, Kick It, by music producer Nigel Martin-Smith in 1989. He designed Take That after the model of New Kids on the Block, and while the group was aimed at teenage fans, Martin-Smith intended the group to appeal to a variety of demographics.
The boy band Five to Five won the reality competition Let It Shine in late February 2017. Five to Five's members include five fresh-faced singers: A.J. Bentley, Curtis T. Johns, Sario Solomon, Yazdan Qafouri, and Nick Carsberg. Five to Five won the contest not only based on their singing chops but also because of their overall musical theatre talent, including energetic renditions of several notable hits, including "Wrecking Ball" by Miley Cyrus and "Can't Stop the Beat" from Hairspray.
Take That was intimately involved with Let It Shine from the start and gave several performances on the show, including a reunion with wayward band member Robbie Williams. The band has been closely involved with The Band: A New Musical, as well, from its conception through its development. The band members have given their blessing to the show itself and to Five to Five's portrayal of them.
The musical's book and music were both written by notable English playwright, songwriter, and screenwriter Tim Firth. Firth's previous credits include The Girls Musical, the musical version and TV script for The Flint Street Nativity, and the script for the film version of Kinky Boots.
