The Bands Visit New York Tickets
The Band’s Visit TicketsThe Broadway musical does not stray far from the original The Band’s Visit, a 2007 Israeli film, Bikur Ha-Tizmoret ("The Band's Visit" in Hebrew), a poli-cultural film examining the interactions between a group of Arabs and a group of Jews thrust together for a single day and night. Adapted into a musical in 2017, the performances began its run on off-Broadway, then moved to Broadway. Due to its adult themes, the producers recommend only those aged 12 years or older attend the performances. The musical calls the Barrymore Theatre in New York City home. Its initial Broadway run was performed during the 2017-2018 Broadway season. In addition to the NY performances, the musical also tours. While on Broadway, the musical won the 2018 Tony Award for Best Musical as well as nine other Tony Awards, two OBIE Awards and the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Musical. It also won the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
Libretto of the One-Act PlayThe story behind the musical score follows an eight-member Egyptian police force band, the Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra, on the way to play a show at Petach Tikvah. When nobody meets them at their arrival in Israel, they arrange their own transportation. It includes a stopover in the small town of Beit Hatikvah in the Negev Desert. The big picture examines the interactions of the Egyptians and Israelis. The major subplot follows Dina, the owner of the town’s café, who had given up on romance, love and resigned herself to listening to songs from her past. Her interactions with orchestra leader Tewfiq provide the romance she desired. Other subplots explore how the members of each culture influence one another during the band’s brief stay in Beit Hatikvah.
