Jazz students go grunge
Friends since high school, drummer Ivan Luketina-Johnston and bassist Benjamin Sinclair teamed up with lead vocalist Elizabeth Stokes and guitarist Jonathan Pearce to form The Beths during their jazz studies at the University of Auckland in 2015. The latter three members had previously been part of Luketina-Johnston's backing band, The Babyshakes, when he performed under the guise of swing singer Sal Valentine. The quartet independently issued their first single, 'Idea/Intent', in 2015 and first EP, 'Warm Blood', a year later before releasing their 2018 debut album, 'Future Me Hates Me', through Dew Process in Australia and Carpark Records in the States. Following Luketina-Johnston's departure in 2018, The Beths recorded their first seven-inch as a trio, a rendition of festive classic 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas', and opened for American alt-rock favourites Death Cab for Cutie on their tour across the UK and Europe. Don't miss out on the opportunity to see one of New Zealand's finest indie rock exports and take a look at the various The Beths tickets currently on offer at StubHub.
Fuzzed-up riffs, energetic beats, three-part harmonies
The Beths have become festival regulars since the release of their debut album, gracing the stages of both homegrown events such as Going Global, Auckland City Limits, and The Others Way and international festivals including Gasparilla, The Great Escape and Green Man. They have also showcased their signature blend of fuzzed-up guitar riffs, energetic beats and three-part harmonies at their own headline dates across the world. Fans should look forward to a melodic, dynamic, and high-spirited show featuring the best tracks from the trio's back catalogu,e including the singles 'Future Me Hates Me', 'You Wouldn't Like Me', 'Happy Unhappy', 'Lying in the Sun', 'Great No One' and 'Little Death'. The band aren't averse to throwing the odd surprise into the setlist either, whether it's a cover version of 'Verona' from fellow New Zealand rockers Elemeno P, a throwback to their beginnings or a brand new taster of their upcoming album.
