The Bridges of Madison County takes place in Madison County, Iowa, in the 1960s and centers on Francesca Johnson, a lonely, Italian war bride. One summer weekend, while her husband and children are away at the 4-H fair, she unexpectedly becomes involved in a life changing, four-day romance with Robert Kincaid, a National Geographic travel photographer. He is visiting the area to photograph the famous covered bridges of Madison County and when he can’t find the last bridge, he drives up to her house to ask if she can help him. Francesca accompanies him to look for the bridge and they spend the next four days together.
The Bridges of Madison County is a 1992 best-selling novel by Robert James Waller. Richard LaGravenese adapted the novel for film in 1995. It starred Clint Eastwood (who also directed the film) and Meryl Streep. The musical adaptation premiered in 2013.
The stage adaptation is a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical. It features beautiful music and lyrics by Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown (Parade, The Last Five Years), a book by Pulitzer Prize winner Marsha Norman (The Secret Garden, The Color Purple) and direction by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher (South Pacific, The Light in the Piazza).
The musical premiered on Broadway in February 2014, at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, located in midtown-Manhattan. It starred Kelli O'Hara (South Pacific, The King and I) as Francesca and Steven Pasquale (Far From Heaven, Carousel) as Robert.
The Memorial Auditorium at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts, plays host to this production of The Bridges of Madison County. Robert James Waller finished the manuscript for The Bridges of Madison County in eleven days. He only intended it as a gift for friends and family, but one of his friends loved the manuscript and asked if he could try to get a literary agent to read it. Later, Waller received a life-changing call from a literary agent in New York.
Originally, Robert Redford was going to direct and star in the film.
