The Burials Chicago Tickets
The Burials is a play written by Caitlin Parrish intended to address the gun violence culture in modern America. Inspired by Antigone, a play written by Sophocles (circa 441 BC), The Burials was written for young adults and appropriately stars young adults.
This 90-minute show is directed by Erica Weiss, a freelance theater director and filmmaker in Chicago, and has no intermission. There are no advisories about subject matter, content or age-appropriateness; the creators and venue leave it up to the audience to decide how to handle the show.
The main character, Sophie, is the ultimate student, a patriotic American and is dedicated to her family. However, her life is turned upside down when her brother goes on a high school shooting rampage. Soon after, she’s plagued with the hateful outcry of the community, the media hounding her family and her father losing control, hoping to push his own political agenda. Meanwhile, she is unable to disassociate herself from her brother’s evil act. Ultimately, The Burials is a “modern tale of civic responsibility and the gun epidemic in America.”
The writer, Caitlin Parrish, is also a writer for the 2016 show Supergirl. Many of her episodes, such as “Better Angels,” “Myriad,” “World’s Finest” and “Manhunter,” have been acclaimed for excellent writing. Additionally, she’s written scripts for Under the Dome, The View from Tall and Emily Owens M.D. Her play, The Downpour was nominated for a Joseph Jefferson Equity Award in 2015 for Best New Work.
