The Castle Theatre - A Historic Theater in Downtown Bloomington
In the heart of downtown Bloomington is a historic venue whose ornate halls hearken back to a grander time when aesthetic beauty was as important as functionality. Treated to a major renovation in recent years, the Castle Theatre is back and better than ever, hosting top-notch musical events for the enjoyment of the Bloomington community.
The Castle Theatre History
The Castle Theatre first opened in 1916, designed by Balaban & Katz, who were famous nationwide for their classic movie palaces. It served as an important entertainment destination in the region for many decades, although with time the neighborhood became somewhat dormant. In recent years, the theater has seen a $1.5 million renovation and now plays host to a variety of musical entertainment and private events.
The Castle Theatre Events
The Castle Theatre primarily serves as a venue for concerts of a variety of musical genres. Past performances at the venue have included appearances by The Revivalists, Lil Yachty, The Mountain Goats and many others.
In addition to the Castle Theatre's concert programming, the venue also hosts community events and children's programming. It has played host to trivia nights, special events like Jackass Live and comedy festivals. It also rents its space out for corporate and private events such as recitals or weddings.
The Castle Theatre Seating Layout
The Castle Theatre can adapt its seating configuration to a variety of different events, offering space for crowds of anywhere from 300 to 700, approximately. The main event floor features removable seats, which facilitates the conversion of the theater space for different events. The upper balcony has fixed seats only. Most shows are general admission and standing room only, but limited seating is available at some shows.
Patrons at the Castle Theatre will enjoy state-of-the-art sound and lighting, exquisite architectural detail, excellent sight lines and two bars on either side of the main floor. The Castle Theatre has also partnered with Rosati's Pizza of Normal to make delicious pizza available to concert-goers from right inside the venue.
Beyond the doors of the Castle Theatre, get out to explore the rest of Bloomington. Make a trip to the Miller Park Zoo or explore the grounds of the gorgeous David Davis Mansion State Historic Site. The Constitution Trail is a great place to enjoy a scenic stroll or bike ride, and the stately McLean County Museum of History offers fascinating insight into the region. If you're looking for other opportunities to attend live shows, check out the US Cellular Coliseum. This larger arena hosts both sporting events and select performing arts shows.
The Castle Theatre's gorgeous architecture features art deco chandeliers, gilded columns and intricate friezes.
