Basing their music off styles such as Brit-Pop and psychedelia, the Connells have enjoyed much success over the years. The band's hit single "'74-'75" performed well on the European pop music charts. In 1991, the Connells were the first band to play Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek in Raleigh, NC, and in 2010, they were the first to play in downtown Raleigh's Red Hat Amphitheater. The band was originally formed in 1984 by Mike Connell and his brother Dave as well as vocalist Doug MacMilan. They would go on to release their debut album Darker Days on Elvis Costello's record label, Demon Records. Following its release, they toured extensively until their second album, Boyland Heights. Released in 1987, it would garner acclaim across American college radio stations. Since then, they have put out more albums that have met success and performed on popular TV shows such as Late Night With Conan O'Brien. In North Carolina in 2013, the Connells worked on new material for another release, which included the songs "Mr. Lucky," "Helium" and "Stars."
Darker Days saw the release of the single of the same name. It would catch success in Europe, but the Connells would truly find success behind the release of Boylan Heights, where tracks such as "Scotty Lament" and "Choose A Side" would introduce outside sounds such as synthesizers that would propel them to higher success, especially on college radio stations. The single "Slackjawed" from the album Ring became popular among European stations.
