The beloved children's book The Gruffalo's Child, written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, has been transformed into an enchanting stage production by Tall Stories Theatre Company. The musical adaptation is presented on stages throughout the U.K., bringing to life the story of the brave young Gruffalo's Child, who ventures out one night into the deep, dark woods in search of the Big Bad Mouse. Does the fearsome beast really exist, or was Dad just telling tall tales? Young readers might already be familiar with The Gruffalo's Child's conclusion, but they've never before seen the story presented in such a delightful way.
The Gruffalo's Child background
The Gruffalo's Child was first published in 2004 as a sequel to the award-winning 1999 book The Gruffalo. It's one of the most popular of more than 180 books written by Julia Donaldson MBE, who was named Children's Laureate from 2011 to 2013. Both books are charmingly illustrated by Axel Scheffler, who also collaborated with Donaldson on Room on the Broom and Stick Man.
Tall Stories Theatre Company, founded in 1997, first presented its adaptation of The Gruffalo's Child on the stage in 2006. The company had already brought its production of The Gruffalo to stages across the U.K. (and later all over the world, including Broadway) since 2001.
The Gruffalo's Child story
Children and families looking to get The Gruffalo's Child tickets probably already know the story back to front. Loyal to the original material, the stage show follows the Gruffalo's Child, who bravely ventures out into the deep, dark woods on a snowy night, following what appear to be the tracks of the legendary Big Bad Mouse. The child's father, the Gruffalo, has recounted his fearsome encounter with the mouse (as told in his own book), and it sounds just a little bit unbelievable.
Following tracks in the snow, the child meets the snake, the fox and the owl, who each tell her where the real Big Bad Mouse can be found. Just when the child decides that the creature from Dad's story must not really exist, the mouse appears. But he's not quite as large, nor as scary, as the child had been led to believe. The friendly mouse repeats the shadow-in-the-moonlight illusion that had fooled the Gruffalo years ago... and the Gruffalo's Child flees in fear! Dad's tale turns out to be true after all.
The Gruffalo's Child experience
The story of brains over brawn is presented on stage by three actors (playing the Gruffalo's Child, the Narrator/Mouse and the Gruffalo), on a set that enchantingly recreates the aesthetic of the original book. Songs and laughs are featured during the 55-minute play, which does not include an interval. The Gruffalo's Child is intended for children ages 3 and up and their families.
The Gruffalo's Child tour features a number of dates designated as "relaxed performances", which are designed for children with special needs.
