The King and I Austin background
The story of The King and I is one that has been told again and again: first, in the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, who served King Mongkut of Siam in the 1860s as governess to his children. The tale was then adapted into Margaret Landon's 1944 novel, Anna and the King of Siam, which eventually served as the basis for The King and I in its musical form.
The show became a reality thanks to Fanny Holtzmann, an agent seeking a suitable role for Gertrude Lawrence. In 1950, Holtzmann contacted the famous musical-writing duo, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, and convinced them to write a musical based on the book by Landon. With Lawrence playing Anna across from Yul Brynner as the King, The King and I first opened on March 29, 1951 at the St. James Theatre on Broadway, where it was met by instant acclaim. That year, it won the Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Actress and Best Featured Actor. The show ran for almost three years, which, at the time, made it one of the longest-running in Broadway history. The show's legacy has lived on in a number of tours and revivals since.
