About The King and I
The King and I is a live stage musical composed by Richard Rodgers with book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein III. The show is based on the 1946 non-musical movie adaptation of a novel called Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon. The King and I opened on Broadway in March 1951. The reviews were positive and the musical went on to have a three-year run, racking up 1,246 performances.
In the 1860s, a widowed British schoolteacher, Anna Leonowens, is hired by the King of Siam (now Thailand) to teach his many children and wives as part of his drive to “modernize” his country. The King and Anna experience a rough, conflicting relationship that also contains a growing love and respect for one other. This richly presented, tender and dramatic story illuminates the 19th-century clash of East and West as Anna and the King each tries to defend and teach their culture and way of life.
The King and I story unfolds to a beautiful musical score with such favorites as “Getting to Know You,” “Something Wonderful” and “Shall We Dance?”
