This classic musical is based off of the 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam, which was a true story of the memoirs of Anna Leonowens. The King and I originally debuted in 1952 when its Broadway production won a Tony Award for Best Musical. The most recent reproduction has been nominated for a total of nine Tony Awards. In 2015, the show won four Tony Awards, one of which was for Best Revival of a Musical. The show also won a Drama Desk Award in 2015 for Outstanding Revival.
A Theater Classic Takes the Stage Once AgainBartlett Sher is the Tony-Award-winning director and mastermind behind The King and I. For this most recent rendition, the South Pacific and The Light in the Piazza creative teams joined forces once again. Sher also enlisted the help of co-director Shelly Butler, set designer Michael Yeargan, and costume designer Catherine Zuber. Additionally, Donald Holder was named lighting director, Scott Lehrer is featured as sound director and the title of choreographer is held by Christopher Gattelli.
