The King and I New Orleans background
The story told in The King and I dates back to memoirs left by Anna Leonowens, a governess who traveled to Siam in the 1860s to teach the king's children. In 1944, Margaret Landon based her novel, Anna and the King of Siam, on those same memoirs. Just six years later, when agent Fanny Holtzmann was trying to come up with a suitable role for her client, Gertrude Lawrence, she thought of the book and reached out to musical writers, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, with the request that they adapt the book for the stage. The musician and lyricist team agreed, and on March 29, 1951, The King and I made its Broadway debut at the St. James Theatre. This original performance featured Gertrude Lawrence and Yul Brynner in the leading roles and was an instant success, earning a variety of Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Actress and Best Featured Actor.
