The King and I Orlando background
The story of The King and I's journey to Broadway began with the real-life Anna Leonowens, who traveled to Siam in the 1860s to serve as governess to the children of King Mongkut. The memoirs she left behind served as the basis for Margaret Landon's 1944 novel, Anna and the King of Siam. It was this book that agent Fanny Holtzmann thought of when she was searching for a new role for her client, leading lady Gertrude Lawrence, in 1950. Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II heeded Holtzmann's request that they adapt the novel for the stage, and in March of the following year, The King and I made its Broadway debut at the St. James Theatre, with Gertrude Lawrence as Anna Leonowens and Yul Brynner as the King. An instant success, the show took home multiple Tony Awards that year, including Best Musical, Best Actress and Best Featured Actor, and soon became one of the longest-running shows of its era on Broadway.
