The King and I Portland Tickets
The King and I Portland TicketsThe true story of an English governess who made her way to the ancient nation of Siam to take the role of governess to the children of the King of the nation has gripped the imagination of generations of readers and viewers. The true story of Anna Leonowens in the 1860s has been made and remade on a number of occasions as a musical on the stage and screen and as a memoir and novel based on Anna's own experiences. The director of the latest Tony-winning revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I, Bartlett Sher believes the story resonates as much today as it has done at any time. As the rights of women and the calls to close the gender pay gap rise around the world, The King and I shows an independent woman traveling to a distant nation to make a home for herself and her family without the aid of a husband inspiring a new generation from her work in 1860s Bangkok.
A Successful Revival of a Beloved MusicalYou cannot say the story of Anna Leonowens is not a well-known one as it has been featured in a number of books, movies, and stage shows. The governess herself published her memoirs and successfully hid her Anglo-Indian heritage until long after her death as she told the story of her days in the Kingdom of Siam. The first movie version of the story starred Rex Harrison and Irene Dunne in 1946, Harrison was the first choice of Rodgers and Hammerstein for the role in their Broadway musical in 1951. Eventually, Yul Brynner would take the role in the original version and become eternally linked with the musical. The revival has been a definite success for the production team with the show nominated for nine Tony Awards in 2015 and winning four, including Best Revival. The impressive creative team was initially headed by Bartlett Sher and included many of the team who joined Sher in reviving another classic show, South Pacific. The team responsible for the original staging of the 2015 revival allowed the majority of its work to the touring production to give the audience an overall experience as close to the original Broadway revival that was critically-acclaimed.
