The Little Mermaid is a musical is based on the 1989 animated feature film. The production tells the story of Ariel, the daughter of the sea king, Triton. She longs to be part of the surface world and spends much of her time near the surface. The evil Ursula sees the weakness in Ariel and plans to use it to take the kingdom away from King Triton. She makes a deal with Ariel: If Ariel can get a human, Prince Eric, to fall in love with her in three days, then Ursula will turn Ariel into a human permanently. If Ariel fails, then Ursula gets her soul. The stage production had a September 2007 pre-Broadway tryout in Denver. The show then moved to Broadway and began previews on Nov. 3, 2007, and made its official Broadway debut on Jan. 10, 2008.I Want to Be Where the People Are
The Little Mermaid has been recognized with multiple award nominations. It was Tony Award nominated for Best Original Score Written for the Theatre and Best Lighting Design of a Musical. The original The Little Mermaid production was re-imagined by Glenn Casale for a 2012 Dutch production. He changed many of the designs and much of the musical's book and score.
