The Maids - Uzo Aduba: From Orange is the New Black to the Stage
Jean Genet's play, loosely based on the story of infamous sisters Christine and Lea Papin, first appeared on stage in the '40s, before going on to make its London debut in 1952 in a production by the Institute of Contemporary Arts. The plot revolves around two housemaids, Solange and Claire, who come up with elaborate scenarios for murdering their mistress (Madame). They take turns, role-playing, each portraying opposing sides of the power divide so apparent in their work. Exploring themes, from the fluidity of identity to the prevalence of class systems, the play is a powerful look at the lengths two unhappy employees are willing to go - even as far as to kill.
Star of hit television series Orange is the New Black Uzo Aduba will appear as Solange alongside Fresh Meat's Zawe Ashton as Claire and Laura Carmichael as Madame of Downtown Abbey in this exciting psychological thriller. Director Jamie Lloyd, known for his artistic interpretations of malignant classics including Macbeth and The Hothouse, brings a new spin to the French play in a production that moves away from theatrical norms in favour of the obscure and wicked.
