The Misfits were formed in Lodi, N.J., in 1977. The band is known for its fusion of punk rock and horror film imagery and themes. Many of the Misfits early albums set the stage for the 80's hardcore punk scene, and these include Walk Among Us and Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood. The band has been through many lineup changes and breakups, and the only original remaining member that has consistently stayed with the group is Jerry Only. Through all the changes and turmoil, the Misfits have remained loyal to its original vision and voice, which is creating hardcore music that deals with hard-hitting issues. While the band has never ranked high on the Billboard charts, it has a cult of followers called the Fiend Club and has undeniably influenced modern punk rock.
The Misfits: Naming Jerry Only
Like many punk rock bands, the Misfits began with some guys who just wanted to make music together. Glenn Danzig recruited Manny Martinez to play the drums. One day, Martinez saw a car at his neighbor's house and noticed there was a bass guitar in it. He found out the guitar was owned by Jerry Caiafa, who had only been playing for two months since he had received the bass guitar as a Christmas gift. Despite Jerry's inexperience, the members decided to add him to the band. The newly formed trio began to practice without a guitarist, using the keyboard to fill in the rhythm of the song. Misfits recorded its first single, "Cough/Cool," on its personal label called Blank Records in August of 1977. On the record's sleeve, Jerry Caiafa's name was misspelled. In response, Jerry told them to credit him as "Jerry, only Jerry" on future records, inadvertently creating the pseudonym, Jerry Only, which he has used on every record since.
