The Naked and Famous: The Plays the Thing
The Naked and Famous founders, Thom Powers, and Alisa Xayalith, both grew up learning music. Alisa Xayalith is a daughter of Laotian refugees, and her father often sang her their native folk music when she was a child. At the age of 13, she decided to teach herself guitar. Thom Powers was taught to play guitar by his father and had been playing in local bands since he was very young. The two came together to work on a couple of extended plays, No Light and This Machine. They released the music from these plays on an EP and began doing live performances locally. It grew from there, and they began The Naked and Famous.
