The Phantom of the Opera is based on a novel written by Gaston Leroux in 1910. It tells the tale of a deformed phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House, scaring performers and audience members alike. When a young singer named Christine comes to the opera house with her beautiful soprano octave, the Phantom falls in love with her and coaches her under the guise of her "Angel of Music" to make her singing even better. As he spends time with Christine, he becomes torn between two sides of himself – one that wants love and one that prefers hate.

The Phantom of the Opera opened in 1988. It is now the longest-running musical in Broadway history. It is also the most successful musical financially. In 1988, the play won seven Tony Awards, including Best Direction of a Musical, Best Musical, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Scenic Design. The Phantom has long been recognized for its score. Andrew Lloyd Webber, Richard Stilgoe and Charles Hart wrote the music, which is both beautiful and haunting.
