The Pillows Tickets
The Pillows TicketsThe Pillows, sometimes stylized as the pillows, is one of the most successful alternative rock bands to come from Hokkaido, Japan. Although the band originally emerged from Japan's alternative rock scene, The Pillows has enjoyed periods of sustained mainstream success. It has also garnered a substantial overseas fanbase thanks to the international success of the anime, FLCL. The band is known for its diverse and experimental style, and although its touring is sometimes limited, The Pillows does play at concerts, festivals and conventions around the world.
Cool GenerationBass guitarist Kenji Ueda and drummer Shinichiro Sato, who were originally members of Kenzi and The Trips, co-founded The Pillows in 1989. The group recruited Sawao Yamanaka and Yoshiaki Manabe from other bands to complete the lineup. After signing with the major entertainment label Pony Canyon, The Pillows released its debut album, Moon Gold, on June 21, 1991. In this initial formative period, the band began to experiment radically with its style, from the post-punk sound of White Incarnation in 1992 to the smooth jazz of Kool Spice in 1994. Though Kenji Ueda would depart the band due to creative differences, The Pillows would carry on with its core lineup. In 2000, the band's music was featured in the limited-run anime series titled FLCL. When the anime aired on Cartoon Network in 2003, The Pillows came to the attention of an international audience for the first time. Meanwhile, the band began to break into the Japanese mainstream charts with regularity. OOPArts (2008) started a success run of five straight albums on the Top 10 charts. The 2009 single, "Ameagari ni mita Maboroshi," became the band's best charting song at No. 4 on Billboard Japan Hot 100. The 2014 album, Moondust, peaked at No. 5 on both the Oricon Weekly and Billboard Japan charts. As a sign of its growing clout, The Pillows had a major breakthrough performance at Summer Sonic 2010 in Osaka, which also featured Taylor Swift, Nickelback and Jay-Z. The Pillows recorded music for a second season of FLCL in 2018.
