Written by three members of the Mischief Theatre Company that is based in West London, The Play That Goes Wrong is a comedy about a fictitious theater production group called the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society. The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society attempts to put on a stage production about a murder mystery that took place in the 1920s. This setting creates the possibility for comedy where the actors are acting in a play within a play. Unfortunately, for this theater group, everything that could go wrong for their murder mystery production does go wrong in a rather spectacular fashion. As a climatic highlight of the show, the very stage set seems to have been built up to become a live antagonist of the production. Comedy then ensues as the theater group desperately and bravely tries to save the night and carry the production forward. The Play That Goes Wrong was highly successful when it premiered in London. In 2017, the production entered the United States where it premiered at Broadway's Lyceum Theatre. It successfully staged more than 700 performances between April 2017 and January 2019.
Rising from Unknown to Being a Sensation
Even while highly successful in London's West End, The Play That Goes Wrong was relatively unknown on Broadway. However, the producers were determined to make the show a success on Broadway. The four leading producers, Kevin McCollum, Catherine Schreiber, Kenny Wax and J.J. Abrams promoted the show by word of mouth and engaged in a widely successful advertising campaign. This production marks J.J. Abrams' first venture into stage musical production. J.J. Abrams was previously known for his work on the newer Star Wars and Star Trek movies. Due to their efforts, The Play That Goes Wrong achieved widespread success as a long-running play. After The Play That Goes Wrong closed its final curtains on Broadway, it moved to the off-Broadway theater New World Stages where it continued its production.
