The charming Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale, The Red Shoes, comes to life in the Los Angeles stage adaptation of the award-winning 1948 film of the same name by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger starring Moira Shearer. The Red Shoes tells the inspiring story of Victoria Page, whose only dream is to become the world's greatest dancer. This passionate ambition leads her to don magic shoes made by a wicked shoemaker that force her to dance non-stop without rest. This leads to a battle between the two men in her life and between her love of dancing and romantic love. Given the story's focus on dancing, it's fitting that the stage adaptation of The Red Shoes in Los Angeles was written and choreographed by an accomplished dancer, Matthew Bourne, winner of two Tony Award for directing and choreographing Swan Lake and eight Olivier Awards including the distinguished Special Olivier Award in 2019.And She Danced
Supporting director and choreographer Bourne on The Red Shoes Los Angeles were Etta Murfitt as associate director and choreographer, Lez Brotherston on sets and costumes, Paule Constable on lights, Paul Groothuis on sound, Duncan McLean on projection design and Terry Davies on orchestrations. The original 1948 film of The Red Shoes was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won two for Best Sound and Best Art and Set Direction. Matthew Bourne's The Red Shoes plays more like a ballet than musical theater, running from start to finish without a single word of dialogue. Instead, the stage is a kaleidoscope of color and movement, the dancers and actors all pantomiming the action of the story, which mainly takes place backstage at a theater but also includes scenes played under a proscenium evoking such locales as beaches in VilleFranche Sur-Mer and Monte Carlo. The performance shifts between full ensemble arrangements and solos and duets. The music they dance to is a medley of musical bits from songs by film composer Bernard Hermann, including music from films like Fahrenheit 451, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, and Citizen Kane. The Red Shoes contains a show within a show, which is The Ballet of the Red Shoes in which Victoria Page is performing.Where is The Red Shoes Los Angeles being staged?
