An iconic literary figure of 1980s Britain
Sue Townsend was a British writer who found much success in later life with the publication of "The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 ¾" in the early 80s. Townsend spent much of her early life writing in secret until she was persuaded to join a workshop at a Leicester theatre, where she overcame significant shyness and eventually became a writer-in-residence. A prestigious London publishing house learned of her character (then called Nigel Mole) through a radio play and later commissioned Townsend to write the novel. Within a year it had sold a million copies. Set during the Thatcher era, the story is written in diary form and follows the life of an adolescent boy who considers himself an intellectual. A misunderstood, haplessly poetic lad, Adrian Mole captured the zeitgeist of Britain in the 1980s. Historic events such as the Falklands War and the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana served as the backdrop to Adrian’s tales and musings, which he often endearingly and humorously misinterprets. The book saw a number of sequels and a well-received stage production took place at Wyndham’s Theatre in London’s West End between 1984 and 1986, and now it sees its great musical adaptation!
