About The Secret Garden
An English and American children’s classic, The Secret Garden was written in 1910 by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The story is centered around a privileged young girl, Mary Lennox, who’s spoiled, selfish and rude. Found alive in her parent’s home in India after a cholera outbreak, she is sent to live with her wealthy uncle, Archibald Craven, a man who has insulated himself from love and affection. After befriending Craven’s sick son, Colin, Mary soon learns that empathy, sensitivity, compassion and kindness are keys to a happy and rewarding life.
Through human interaction and an abandoned garden hidden within Misselthwaite Manor, each character grows, blossoms and overcomes personal struggles to make a better life for themselves and their newly formed family. The California Theatre plays host to The Secret Garden.
With the popularity of The Secret Garden reaching an all-time high in the early 90s, Broadway jumped aboard the train and created a production that was nominated for seven Tony Awards. Premiering in 1991, Marsha Norman won for Best Book of a Musical and Daisy Eagon won for Best Featured Actress at eleven years old. As one of the youngest to ever win a Tony Award, Daisy Eagon easily stole the spotlight. Additional cast members included Mandy Patinkin as Archibald Craven, John Babcock as Colin Craven and Alison Fraser as Martha.
Broadway’s wasn’t the only successful adaptation. Jessica Swale – an English director, writer and playwright – wrote another stage adaptation of this classic (sans the singing), which premiered at Grosvenor Park in 2014. Swale’s play version of The Secret Garden starring Jessica Clark as Mary, Max Gallagher as Colin and Mark Healy as Craven, received excellent reviews.
