The Sound of Music Calgary history
The Sound of Music was the final collaboration between Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, and it seems they saved the best for last. Originally intending the show to be a play simply featuring songs by the Trapp Family Singers, producers Leland Hayward and Richard Halliday brought on Rodgers & Hammerstein to produce a few original songs but ultimately decided to transform the show into a musical with all-new music. Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse remained to produce the book, and Vincent J. Donehue provided direction. On November 16, 1959, the show opened at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on Broadway. The show's instant acclaim and fame were only solidified when the show was adapted into a 1965 film starring Julie Andrews - one of the most successful film adaptations of all time - which is credited with popularizing much of the music.
Now, three-time Tony Award-winning director Jack O'Brien has developed an all-new production of this timeless classic, sending it on an extensive tour throughout North America and bringing joy and magic to audiences of all ages across the continent.
