About The Sound of Music
The Sound of Music Broadway musical is now touring the United States. Director Jack O’Brien and Choreographer Danny Mefford bring a new flair to the beautiful music and lyrics of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. Audiences will delight in this re-envisioned musical that tells the inspiring tale of the Von Trapps through beautiful songs like “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” and the title song, “The Sound of Music.” With a message of love and courage that’s still relevant today, the show will thrill audiences with its familiar melodies and a powerful story.
The story begins with Maria, a postulant at an Austrian convent ready to become a nun. Before she does, she is sent to the Von Trapp family as governess to the children. Through music, she connects with them to the surprise and admiration of their father, Captain Von Trapp. Though involved with the wealthy Elsa Shrader, Captain Von Trapp admires Maria for returning music to his house. After an unexpected, intimate dance with the Captain, Maria flees the house and returns to the convent, only to realize her future lies in her decisions with the Von Trapp family and Captain Von Trapp.
To her dismay, Maria returns to find the Captain and Elsa engaged. A disagreement between the Captain and Elsa about how to handle the impending Nazi takeover ends their engagement. Free to express their love, Maria and the Captain become engaged and marry. What awaits them when they return will shock and surprise them, leaving love and courage as their only weapons left to escape from the Nazis.
