About The Waterboys
Originally formed by the formidably talented Mike Scott, the Waterboys would burst into existence in 1983 as a musical project composed of mainly Scottish, Irish, and English musicians. The band would build up a considerable fan base with a near constant tour schedule, becoming one of the most celebrated folk rock jam bands of the 80s that delivered performance experiences unlike any other. During this era of the Waterboys, known as the Big Music era, the band sampled heavily from the folk genre and featured a huge retinue of performers on stage at any given time. This era of the Waterboys would fade out in 1993, when the band was temporarily disbanded by Mike Scott, who decided instead to pursue a solo career.
The Waterboys would be reformed in 2000, moving in an experimental rock direction and bringing aboard many of the band's former members. This era of the Waterboys would persist until 2003, with the band then moving in a Celtic music direction and putting out a constant body of work throughout the decade. The band invited a plethora of talented musicians including Simon Wallace, Katie Kim, and Joe Chester, adding depth and variety to the Waterboys sound that persists into today.
Previous Hits
One of the band's earliest hits came with 1985's This Is the Sea, a breakout hit that climbed to #37 on the UK Albums charts and the #4 and #6 position in the Netherlands and New Zealand, respectively. The album would be certified silver in the UK, helped along by visionary producers Mick Glossop, Karl Wallinger, and John Brand. The album boasts heavy Velvet Underground and Van Morrison influences, and received widespread critical acclaim including a perfect score from Kerrang!, and near perfect scores from AllMusic, Melody Maker, and The Rough Guide To Rock. The album spawned two classic Waterboys singles, including the top charting "The Whole of the Moon" and "Don't Bang The Drum".
The band's 1988 followup Fisherman's Blues remains their best selling album to date, receiving gold certification as it blew up charts across with board with top 20 showings in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Sweden. The album again received widespread critical praise from AllMusic and Rolling Stone, and eventually hit the #76 position on the US Billboard 200. The album was carried by three hit singles, including title track "Fisherman's Blues", "And a Bang on the Ear", and "World Party".
Trivia
Mike Scott considers the Waterboys and his solo work indistinguishable, and the only distinguishing factor is branding and name recognition.
The current lineup of the Waterboys features just four members - Mike Scott, fiddler and mandolin player Steve Wickham, percussionist Ralph Salmins, and keyboardist Paul Brown. The band's long list of former members makes it the most heavily populated rock act of all time.
