The Woman in Black is a classic ghost story in the tradition of Edgar Allan Poe. Based on Susan Hill's novel about a spectre roaming the halls of Eel Marsh House, The Woman in Black realises a classic piece of horror fiction onstage. Recognised as one of a kind, the two-man production is the second longest running play in London's West End. Performed at the intimate Fortune Theatre, The Woman in Black has been going strong for over two decades and attracted over seven million theatregoers. The Woman in Black has also enjoyed considerable success abroad.
More About The Woman in Black - An Eerie Theatre Experience
Critically-acclaimed and loved by millions, The Woman in Black has been transformed from novel to play. The Woman in Black has also been re-imagined as a film starring Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe as its tormented main character Arthur Kipps.
Adapted for stage in 1987 by playwright Stephen Mallarat, The Woman in Black was first performed at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough. A proper English ghost story, the play combines touches of film noir with the intensity of live theatre. The stripped down production emphasises its story, characters and atmosphere to effectively hammer home degrees of horror.
As the play unfolds, the aged Arthur - with the aid of a young thespian - acts out the unsettling events he experienced as a junior solicitor. Summoned to Eel Marsh House to sort the papers of the recently deceased Mrs. Alic Drablow, Kipps encounters a frightening young woman dressed in black after stumbling upon a tragic family secret.
