Historic and haunted

Built in the mid-17th Century, the historic venue was first known as Theatre Royal in Bridges Street but following a fire which forced owner Thomas Killigrew to rebuild, it was given its more familiar moniker. The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane established itself as one of London's premier theatres over the next century before its building was demolished to make way for a new, bigger capacity venue in 1794. Following another major fire, the property which still stands today opened to the public in 1812. Shakespearean actor Edmund Kean, celebrated composer Ivor Novello and music hall comedian Dan Leno were just a few of the major names who took residency there in the pre-war era, while popular shows included "Armada," "The Whip" and "The Shaughraun." The building has also been hailed as the West End circuit's most haunted, with the ghosts of one-time performers Charles Macklin and Joseph Grimaldi said to roam backstage. The home of the long-running musical

The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane is today best known for its recent history of hugely popular musicals. "Oklahoma," "My Fair Lady" and "42nd Street" have all enjoyed runs lasting at least five years, while the 1989-1999 stint for "Miss Saigon" remains its longest-running show. Other notable hits include "Hello, Dolly!," "The King and I," "Carousel," "The Great Waltz" and "A Chorus Line," while Monty Python recorded their 1974 live album at the venue. The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane has continued to stage numerous hit musicals since West End maestro Andrew Lloyd Webber took ownership in 2005, including "The Producers," "The Lord of the Rings," "Oliver," "Shrek the Musical" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". The musical impresario also oversaw a £4 million restoration in 2013 which returned much of the Grade I-listed, 2,196-capacity venue to its original Recency design in the year it celebrated its 350th anniversary.
