Theory of a Deadman is a rock band that came from Delta, British Columbia in Canada. While they are considered a rock band, the band has also dabbled in country and acoustic music. Since it formed in 2001, Theory of a Deadman has released six studio albums, 36 singles, 25 music videos and one EP. Theory of a Deadman was discovered and signed by Chad Kroeger, the lead singer of Nickelback, after Kroeger's ex-girlfriend gave him a copy of its demo tape. Their debut album, Theory of a Deadman, reached No. 4 on the Canadian charts and No. 85 on the US charts and was certified platinum in Canada. During their career, Theory of a Deadman has been nominated for 17 awards and has won the 2003 Juno Award for New Group of the Year, the 2009 Western Canadian Music Award for Outstanding Rock Recording, the 2010 SOCAN Pop/Rock Music Award, the 2010 BMI Pop Awards for Award-Winning Song, the 2012 SOCAN No.1 Song Award and the 2017 SOCAN No. 1 Song Award.
Theory of a Deadman: Now Just a Theory
When Theory of a Deadman got started under Chad Kroeger, they had a hard time differentiating themselves from Nickelback. This is unsurprising since Kroeger writes most of Nickelback's music and contributed to many of the songs on Theory of a Deadman's first album. Lead singer Tyler Connolly also has a voice very similar to Kroeger's. It was on their second album, Gasoline, that the band pulled away from the signature Nickelback sound and found its own voice. This album's songs were mostly written by Connolly and were very raw because they were about a recent breakup he had been through. This rawness resonated with people, and the album made it into the Top 60 on the Billboard charts and produced four singles that made it onto the rock charts. Theory of a Deadman has continued to grow over the years, so much so that it opted to begin just going by the name "Theory" instead of Theory of a Deadman, although fans still refer to it by the original name.
