The group started out in 2006. They already had a following in Western Sydney's deathcore scene, so it wasn't hard for them to continue building their audience under the new name. They gained a lot of attention for their lyrics and song titles, which can be controversial. One of the band members departed from the group due to creative differences, and the band later admitted that he had an attitude problem that didn't gel with the rest of the members' laid-back personalities.
Original band members included vocalist Brendan van Ryn, guitarists Gary Markowski and Sean Delander, bassist Josh King and drummer Lee Stanton. They recorded their first demo together and did some touring before Van Ryn left the group. The band replaced him with Chris "CJ" McMahon from the Sydney metalcore band, Vegas in Ruins. Bassist Mick Lowe came in to replace King before they released their first album.
The band had a big following in the local hardcore scene in Sydney, but they didn't really make it big until 2010, when they released their first full-length album, The Adversary. They hopped on board with Canadian deathcore band, Despised Icon. Australian band, The Red Shore, joined them on their tour later that year. This touring publicity helped them break out and gain notice by a larger audience.
Thy Art is Murder released their first EP, Infinite Death, in 2008, which gained them attention in Sydney and other parts of Australia. The Adversary was released in 2010. They dealt with a few different lineup stages before releasing their second album, Hate, which included the hit single "Reign of Darkness." The album debuted at #35 on the ARIA charts; Thy Art is Murder are the first extreme metal band to break the top 40!
There is nothing quite like seeing this band live. They love to push the envelope in every way possible, from their sometimes controversial lyrics to the way they have perfected their loud death growls onstage. Expect to find a room full of people ready to rock it out in an audience of dedicated fans. The band tend to bring a lot of energy to the stage and will pull out hits from all of their previous albums to please fans both new and old."
