Alongside other leading gymnastics events, such as the World Cup of Gymnastics and the World Gymnastics Championships, this competition is one of the most highly anticipated in the world of gymnastics. With two other disciplines of artistic and trampoline gymnastics making up the schedule for the games in Tokyo, there is much to choose from. Top gymnasts come together every four years to compete for the prestigious award of the gold medal. In previous years, this sport has been dominated by the Russians, who have won the individual and team awards on no less than the last five occasions. In fact, you have to go all the way back to 1996 to a time when Russia did not take home gold in this competition. You can be in Japan to see who the next champion will be and to watch history in the making. Having been held all over the world, the next event will be held in Tokyo. Don't miss this highly skilled event
Whilst artistic gymnastics was first introduced into the games in 1896, rhythmic gymnastics only became part of the programme at the Los Angeles games in 1984. Performing on a 13 x 13 metre mat for 75 to 90 seconds, gymnasts perform four times using different apparatus (a hoop, ball, pair of clubs and a ribbon). For the group event, the team of five gymnasts perform twice for two minutes 15 seconds to two minutes 30 seconds. Judges watch carefully and score the athletes on the strength, speed and skill shown in their routine. Music also plays an important part in this brilliantly unique event, with gymnasts also being judged on their interpretation of the music.
